Inquiry Project

Topic Proposal: Nonverbal Communication

Working Inquiry Question:  How do men and women communicate differently using body language, and why does it matter in dating, the workplace, and social circles?

I chose to write about nonverbal communication because most of the communication that we use daily is nonverbal.  I want to learn more on how nonverbal details can reveal who we are and how we relate to other people.  I also want to learn how nonverbal communication can be seen differently between men and women in relationships and other settings.  I want to focus mostly on body language.
I know that nonverbal communication is used sometimes more often than verbal because it’s so easy to tell how a person feels or the type of mood they are in just by their facial expressions whether there smiling, frowning, anger, or looking scared or worried.  I believe you can identify a lot about a person without even having to talk to them.  I have experienced this personally in relationships with my friends.  For example, one of my really good friends always tries to hide when things are going wrong so she pretends everything is okay but I am very good with being able to observe through her body language that something is wrong.
I want to know more about how nonverbal communication is different between men and women.  Do women have a different type of body language than men when it comes to communicating?
I believe it’s important to learn how to communicate nonverbal cues effectively because you wouldn’t want to be trying to convey one message one way and then the other person takes it the wrong way. What you communicate through your body language and nonverbal signals affects how others will see you, how well they will like you and respect you, and whether or not they can trust you.  I want to be able to understand nonverbal cues better because this can lead to effective communicating and healthier relationships whether in friendships or in love.
I want to try to narrow down this topic and focus on one area in particular which
I believe will be the difference in communication between men and women.
